The ledger
Hayward, Gobert, Mitchell (2011–2022)2013–14 Utah Jazz
The fortieth season in franchise history was the worst one Utah had played in more than three decades. Paul Millsap and Al Jefferson, the frontcourt the team had been built around, both left in free agency over the summer, Millsap to Atlanta and Jefferson to Charlotte, and assistant Jeff Hornacek left to become head coach of the Phoenix Suns. What remained was a young roster with no obvious floor.
23 in, 7 out. Every move the record shows for this season, with the reason where a source gives one. Where no reason is documented, the entry says nothing rather than guess.

signed first round pick
- Denver took him 27th overall in 2013 and traded his rights to Utah. Nine seasons, three Defensive Player of the Year awards and a $205 million extension later — with the team stuck short of the conference finals and the Gobert-Mitchell relationship strained — Danny Ainge traded him to Minnesota on July 6, 2022 for four first-round picks and five players.
- Three-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year during his time in Utah.
- Background: July 2022: Danny Ainge's first big deal as head of basketball operations. Utah received Beasley, Beverley, Vanderbilt, Bolmaro, the 22nd pick (Walker Kessler) and four first-round picks. source
signed first round pick
- Minnesota took him ninth overall in 2013 and traded him to Utah for the 14th and 21st picks, because the Jazz wanted a point guard. He lost the starting job, and once George Hill arrived in 2016 Utah sent him to Washington for a second-rounder.
- Was the consensus NCAA National Player of the Year in 2013 at Michigan.
- Background: REASON (Utah): the club needed a point guard and believed Burke could 'step in and contribute right away'. He was the 2013 Naismith Player of the Year out of Michigan, aged 20. source
- ARRIVAL 27.06.2013: Minnesota selected him 9th, but immediately sent him to Utah for picks 14 and 21 (with which the Wolves took Shabazz Muhammad and Gorgui Dieng). source

signed free agent to a multi-year contract
- Utah called him up from the Iowa Energy on November 13, 2013 — the season's first D-League signing — after waiving Jamaal Tinsley while Trey Burke recovered from finger surgery. The Jazz used cap room to trade him to Toronto for Steve Novak in July 2014.
- Went undrafted out of Iowa State and still earned two NBA seasons.
- Background: THE SEASON IN UTAH 2013-14: 71 games, 3.5 points, 1.4 rebounds, 1.7 assists in 14.8 minutes, shooting .381/.375/.833. Depth at the position was thin: Burke, John Lucas, and Alec Burks was more of a wing. source
- ARRIVAL — the context: rookie Trey Burke (the No. 9 pick in 2013) breaks the index finger of his right hand in a preseason game against the LA Clippers on 12 October 2013, surgery with pins is required, prognosis 8-12 weeks. That opens a hole at point guard. source
- ARRIVAL — the first patch does not work: on 26 October 2013 the Jazz sign veteran Jamaal Tinsley precisely because of Burke's injury. On 12 November 2013 (Tuesday) they waive him after eight games: 1.1 points and 2.9 assists in 13.8 minutes, 4/20 from the field and 1/15 from three, and he and John Lucas cannot handle opposing guards defensively (Denver runs a 28-8 stretch on them in the fourth quarter the previous night). The team's record is 0-8 — the second-worst start in franchise history. source

- DEPARTURE July 2013: Utah lets him reach unrestricted free agency after the expiry of the 5-year, $65 million extension signed back in Minnesota. On 4 July 2013 he agrees to terms with Charlotte, officially signs on 10 July — 3 years, $40.5 million, with a player option on the last one. source

- THE REASON FOR THE SIGNING: Raja Bell (the starting shooting guard) has a strained left adductor after the loss to Houston — his fourth missed game of the season. Utah is reshuffling the lineup (Josh Howard at the three, Gordon Hayward at the two) and needs a wing. Tyrone Corbin says he is ready to play Carroll that very night against San Antonio. source
- EXIT: ESPN (5-6 July 2013) — Atlanta agrees to terms with Paul Millsap (2 yrs, $19 million) and with his Utah teammate DeMarre Carroll, 'after the Jazz released him'. Utah renounces its rights to Millsap the same day, to clear cap space for the deal with Golden State. Carroll's agent confirms the signing to ESPN The Magazine. source

- THE REASON FOR THE CHOICE, from the man himself to the Salt Lake Tribune: "Winning is key to me. You can't replace winning. Winning is priceless." And: "I was spoiled early. So now, going into my 10th year, it's a chance to get back to my foundation, my roots." He comes after five straight losing seasons. source
- EXIT: he is NOT re-signed in the summer of 2013. He becomes an unrestricted free agent and signs with the Portland Trail Blazers on a one-year, $1.4 million contract for the 2013-14 season. source

- Exit: on August 8, 2013 he signed with the Portland Trail Blazers — $5.6 million over two years with a player option for the second. He chose Portland because of his ties to GM Neil Olshey and coach Terry Stotts. He had considered Miami and Memphis, but they offered less. source
