DeMarre Carroll

Utah is where the "Junkyard Dog" saved his career. Cut loose by three teams in three years after Memphis drafted him 27th in 2009, Carroll signed with the Jazz in February 2012 and turned relentless defense into a real NBA life — Atlanta came next, where he started for the Hawks team that went 17–0 in January 2015, followed by a four-year, $60 million contract in Toronto.

He had already beaten longer odds: weeks before the draft, doctors found a liver disease that may one day require a transplant. He credits his inspiration to play to his brother DeLonte, who died of a brain tumor at age nine. Carroll is now an assistant coach with the Phoenix Suns.

HOW HE CAME & WENTDenver waived him on February 4, 2012 and Utah signed him four days later, needing a wing while Raja Bell nursed a groin injury. He became a free agent in 2013 and signed with Atlanta that August.
