Rebuild and the Deron years (2003–2011)

2006–07 Utah Jazz

51–31 · coach: Jerry Sloan · Delta Center, renamed EnergySolutions Arena in November 2006
Playoffs: reached the Western Conference Finals, lost to San Antonio, 1–4

The team's 33rd NBA season started with the aim of improving on 41–41. They improved by ten games to 51–31 and returned to the playoffs after three years away. Carlos Boozer and Mehmet Okur were both named All-Stars. Paul Millsap, a second-round rookie, made the All-Rookie Second Team. The offseason work paid off immediately: the 2006 draft brought Millsap and Ronnie Brewer, and a trade brought veteran guard Derek Fisher.

21 in, 2 out. Every move the record shows for this season, with the reason where a source gives one. Where no reason is documented, the entry says nothing rather than guess.

trade with Raptors
Rafael Araujo Center · 2006–07
  • Toronto sent him and cash to Utah for Kris Humphries and Robert Whaley on June 8, 2006. His rookie contract expired after one season and the Jazz signed Kyrylo Fesenko instead — his NBA career was over.
  • Played college basketball in Utah at BYU before his NBA career.
  • the club gave up: Kris Humphries, Robert Whaley
2006 NBA draft first round pick (#14 overall)
Ronnie Brewer Guard · 2006–10
  • Utah took him 14th overall in 2006. At the 2010 deadline, some $5.1 million over the luxury-tax line, the Jazz sent him to Memphis for a first-round pick — a move that cut their tax bill to about $2.3 million, though Kevin O'Connor insisted it was about minutes and a future asset.
  • His father Ron Brewer was a first-round NBA pick and an Arkansas legend.
  • Background: 18 February 2010: traded to Memphis for a 2011 first-round pick. source
2006 NBA draft second round pick (#46 overall)
Dee Brown Guard · 2006–07
  • Utah drafted him 46th overall in 2006 with no guaranteed contract, so he made the roster out of camp. When Washington signed him to an offer sheet in July 2008 the Jazz, already deep at point guard, declined to match.
  • Doubled as his high school's starting quarterback and drew football recruiting interest from Florida State and Nebraska.
2006 NBA draft second round pick (#47 overall)
Paul Millsap Forward · 2006–13
  • Utah took him 47th overall in 2006 and he immediately outplayed the slot. In July 2013 the club renounced his rights — clearing the room for the Golden State salary-dump trade that brought in picks — and handed the front line to Derrick Favors and Enes Kanter. He signed with Atlanta.
  • Led all of NCAA Division I in rebounding in three consecutive seasons — the first player to do so.
  • Background: July 2013: the Jazz renounced his rights to clear room for the trade with Golden State (Jefferson, Biedrins, Rush + picks). source

  • Utah acquired him on July 12, 2006 for Keith McLeod, Andre Owens and Devin Brown. A year later he asked to be released so he could move his daughter closer to specialist cancer care, and the Jazz let him go.
  • Won five NBA championships with the Los Angeles Lakers.

lost free agent (to Sonics)
Milt Palacio Guard · 2005–06
  • THE END, part 1 — SURGERY: he missed the Jazz's final games with inflammation in his LEFT knee and had surgery in the spring of 2006. Agent Andy Miller: 'a little cleanup of some loose particles in his knee'; 'It's nothing major, but we're better off doing it now.' According to the agent, the operation would not keep him from being ready for the following season. source
  • THE END, part 2 — HE WANTED TO STAY: an unrestricted free agent. Agent Andy Miller, quoted verbatim: 'Milt's first hope — and I made this clear to Utah — is we can reach an agreement with Utah. He really enjoyed playing for Coach (Jerry) Sloan and wants to maintain that relationship.' source
