His father Ron starred at Arkansas in the late 1970s, and Ronnie followed, averaging 18.4 points for the Razorbacks before Utah took him 14th in the 2006 draft. The shooting guard with the famously unorthodox release — the legacy of a childhood water slide injury — won the starting job in 2007–08 and ranked among the league leaders in steals.
After defensive-specialist seasons with Chicago and stops in New York, Oklahoma City and Houston, he went back to Fayetteville: hired by Arkansas in 2021 as recruiting coordinator and promoted to assistant coach before the 2023–24 season. He is a cousin of Detroit rapper Guilty Simpson.
HOW HE CAME & WENTUtah took him 14th overall in 2006. At the 2010 deadline, some $5.1 million over the luxury-tax line, the Jazz sent him to Memphis for a first-round pick — a move that cut their tax bill to about $2.3 million, though Kevin O'Connor insisted it was about minutes and a future asset.
