Virginia Tech still keeps his numbers on the wall — the 1973 NIT championship, a school-record 52-point game, a 23.1-point career average, a retired jersey. Philadelphia drafted the forward they called Disco in the second round in 1973, and across ten NBA and ABA seasons he passed through the Sixers and Spurs before joining New Orleans as a free agent in 1979. A 1981 trade sent him to Dallas, where he retired in 1983.
The second career outdid the first: five years as Charlotte Hornets head coach brought the franchise's first playoff series win and a 50-victory season, and he later ran basketball operations for the New Orleans Hornets. The Virginia Sports Hall of Fame inducted him in 1997.
HOW HE CAME & WENTHe signed with New Orleans as a veteran free agent on June 28, 1979, with Paul Griffin going to San Antonio as compensation. In August 1981 he and Wayne Cooper were traded to Dallas for Bill Robinzine.
