The ledger
Rebuild and the Deron years (2003–2011)2005–06 Utah Jazz
The team's 32nd NBA season began with the modest goal of improving on the previous year's 26–56. They improved by fifteen games and finished exactly 41–41 — and still missed the playoffs for a third straight season, having previously not missed once between 1984 and 2004.
16 in, 3 out. Every move the record shows for this season, with the reason where a source gives one. Where no reason is documented, the entry says nothing rather than guess.

16 ARRIVED2005 NBA draft first round pick (#3 overall)
- Utah took him third overall in 2005 and built a decade around him. On February 9, 2011 he overruled a Jerry Sloan play call, the two had it out, and Sloan resigned the next day after 23 years. Two weeks later, with Williams heading for free agency, the Jazz traded him to New Jersey for Devin Harris, Derrick Favors, two firsts and $3 million.
- Led Illinois to the 2005 NCAA championship game before being drafted third overall.
