Rebuild and the Deron years (2003–2011)2004–05 Utah Jazz
The Jazz's 31st NBA season and 26th in Salt Lake City began well and then came apart. Utah won six of its first seven games, which briefly suggested the post-Malone rebuild was ahead of schedule, then lost 12 of 15 in December. A nine-game losing streak in March finished the job. The team ended 26–56, last in the Northwest Division and out of the playoffs for a second straight year.

30 ARRIVED2004 NBA draft first round pick (#16 overall)
- Utah drafted him 16th overall in 2004 and his entire Jazz career was that rookie season under Jerry Sloan. Frustrated by the minutes, he asked to be traded — Sloan said he was not looking to move him — and Utah sent him to New Orleans in August 2005.
- Led Nevada to a Sweet Sixteen upset run in the 2004 NCAA tournament before being drafted.
- Background: Sloan on the background: "The bottom line is he probably wasn't playing as much as he'd like to play, and I think we probably frustrated him a little bit because of that." source
- ARRIVAL: selected 16th overall in the 2004 draft out of Nevada. One season in Utah: 68 games, 7 as a starter, under 5 points and about 13 minutes per game. source

- Utah drafted him 14th overall in 2004 and traded him with Robert Whaley to Toronto for Rafael Araujo on June 8, 2006, after two lean seasons.
- Was a national swimming champion in his age group as a child before choosing basketball.

- Fresh off a title in Detroit, he signed a six-year deal with Utah on July 27, 2004 and gave the club seven seasons and an All-Star appearance. A ruptured Achilles and back trouble cost him almost all of 2010-11, and that December the Jazz moved his $11 million salary to New Jersey for a trade exception and a second-round pick.
- Was the first Turkish player named an NBA All-Star, in 2007 with the Jazz.
- Background: He played only 13 games in 2010-11 because of his Achilles and his back. source
signed restricted free agent (from Cavaliers) to a 6-year, $68M contract
- He signed with Utah on July 30, 2004 in the move that made 'pulling a Boozer' league slang, and gave the club six seasons and two All-Star nods. He hit unrestricted free agency in 2010, and rather than lose him for nothing the Jazz sign-and-traded him to Chicago for a $13 million trade exception.
- Made two All-Star teams while with the Jazz, in 2007 and 2008.
- Background: He becomes an unrestricted free agent in 2010. The Jazz sign-and-trade him to Chicago so as not to lose him for nothing — they receive a trade exception of $13-14 million. source

- Toronto's 12th pick in 1999 signed with Utah as a free agent on October 4, 2004, and the Jazz waived him three months later, on January 4.

- ARRIVAL: 2002 draft night. Orlando takes Borchardt 18th, Utah takes Ryan Humphrey 19th, and the two are traded immediately. Utah sends Orlando the rights to Ryan Humphrey (19th) PLUS a second-rounder (the rights to Jamal Sampson) — so it is not a clean 18-for-19 swap. source

- Exit: on August 8, 2013 he signed with the Portland Trail Blazers — $5.6 million over two years with a player option for the second. He chose Portland because of his ties to GM Neil Olshey and coach Terry Stotts. He had considered Miami and Memphis, but they offered less. source
