Before basketball there was swimming — at ten Humphries was the top age-group swimmer in the country in six events, once beating a young Michael Phelps, and his national 50-meter freestyle record stood for 18 years. He left the pool at 12, became Minnesota's Mr. Basketball, led the Big Ten in scoring and rebounding as a Gophers freshman, and was drafted 14th by the Jazz in 2004. Two lean years in Utah preceded his best basketball with the Nets, where he averaged 13.8 points and 11 rebounds in 2011-12.
He retired in 2016 after playing for eight NBA franchises.
