Cut loose by Minnesota and San Antonio and playing CBA ball in Rockford, the Detroit-born guard got his break when the Jazz needed a backup for John Stockton in late 1995. Jerry Sloan called him a focused young man, and the quiet point guard held the job for five seasons and two Finals trips. In Game 6 of the 1998 Finals, referee Dick Bavetta mistakenly disallowed his first-half three-pointer in a game the Jazz lost by one. He returned for a final Utah season in 2004-05.

Coaching came next: player development with the Clippers, assistant posts with the Wizards, the Knicks and Michigan under Juwan Howard, then a scouting job with Dallas in 2025.

HOW HE CAME & WENTAlready once the last man cut from a Jazz camp, he came back in 1995 and stayed five seasons and two Finals runs. In August 2000 Utah re-signed him to a seven-year, $41 million contract and moved him straight to Dallas in a four-team sign-and-trade, taking Donyell Marshall back. He returned on a one-year deal in 2004.
