The Stockton–Malone era (1984–2003)

1992–93 Utah Jazz

47–35 · 3rd, Midwest Division (6th seed, Western Conference) · Delta Center
Playoffs: lost Western Conference First Round to Seattle SuperSonics, 2–3

The 19th season in franchise history and the 14th in Salt Lake City was also the season Salt Lake City took its turn on the league's biggest stage: the NBA All-Star weekend came to the Delta Center. On the floor, the Jazz began the year with a retooled backcourt and bench after an off-season trade brought Jay Humphries and Larry Krystkowiak in from Milwaukee, and the new pieces took hold immediately — Utah won six of its first eight games.

10 in, 4 out. Every move the record shows for this season, with the reason where a source gives one. Where no reason is documented, the entry says nothing rather than guess.

trade with Bucks
Jay Humphries Guard · 1992–95
  • Milwaukee sent him and Larry Krystkowiak to Utah on draft night 1992 for Blue Edwards, Eric Murdock and a first-rounder — the Jazz wanted a backup for John Stockton. In February 1995 Utah traded him to Boston and got Edwards back.
  • Started in the Jazz backcourt during their 1992 Western Conference Finals run.
  • Background: In Utah he plays 1992-93 and 1993-94 as Stockton's backup, plus part of 1994-95. On April 30, 1994 in Game 2 against San Antonio in the Alamodome he scores 25 points off the bench (the most in the game, more than Karl Malone's 23 and Stockton's 17) in a 96-84 win. source
  • ARRIVAL: June 24, 1992, on draft day — a five-player trade. Milwaukee sends Jay Humphries and Larry Krystkowiak to Utah for Blue Edwards, Eric Murdock and a 1992 first-round pick (used on Lee Mayberry). source
  • Utah acquired him from Milwaukee with Jay Humphries in June 1992, three years after reconstructive surgery on his left knee had cost him two seasons. He turned down a four-year Jazz offer, the club signed Tom Chambers instead, and he joined Orlando.
  • Later coached the University of Utah men's team for eleven seasons.
  • Background: THE KNEE (the core of the story) — May 14, 1989, Game 3 of the Eastern Conference semifinals, 25 seconds after tip-off: he stepped on a wet spot and his left knee folded, 'twisting at a grotesque angle'. Torn medial collateral and anterior cruciate ligaments. The surgeons repaired 'the medial capsule and colateral ligaments and a torn medial meniscus ligament'. The severity: doctors could swing his lower leg through 50 degrees while the knee lay on the table. source
  • ARRIVAL — the trade, June 24, 1992: Milwaukee sends Jay Humphries and Larry Krystkowiak to Utah for Blue Edwards, Eric Murdock and the No. 23 first-round pick in the 1992 draft. The Jazz were looking above all for a backup to point guard John Stockton (Humphries) and for bench reinforcement. source
  • ARRIVAL — why HIM specifically: the Jazz took him to strengthen the bench and try for a breakthrough to the Finals. Jerry Sloan on him: 'That's what got him in the league and what's kept him there. He's one of those guys who scoring 20 points a night doesn't have to be his game.' Krystkowiak himself: 'I just try to do the little things...play hard and try to get my hands on loose balls.' He saw himself as a complement to Karl Malone, not as a starter. source
  • the club gave up: Blue Edwards, Eric Murdock, 1992 first round pick (#23-Lee Mayberry)
signed free agent to a 1-year contract
John Crotty Guard · 1992–2002
  • Undrafted, he signed with Utah in September 1992 and spent three seasons behind John Stockton. The Jazz waived him in October 1995, wanting a backup who could still develop. He returned in 2000 for two more seasons and retired in 2002.
  • Went undrafted out of Virginia and still played more than a decade in the NBA.
  • Background: Deseret News biography: 'Signed as free agent by Jazz (Sept. 4, 1992).' He spends THREE seasons in Utah (1992-95), 'two as role player and one as John Stockton's primary backup' — that is, the current text on the site, 'four seasons', is wrong. source
re-signed to a 4-year contract
David Benoit Forward · 1991–2001
signed free agent
Mike Higgins never played a minute for the club
signed free agent
Tim Legler Guard · 1992–93
  • The Jazz signed him as a free agent on September 28, 1992 and waived him on November 25, years before he became one of the league's best shooters in Washington.
  • Led the NBA in three-point percentage in 1995–96 and won the Three-Point Contest that year.
signed to a 2-year contract
Ike Austin
signed free agent
Stephen Howard Forward · 1992–97
  • Undrafted, he talked his way into a rookie tryout and simply refused to be cut. His whole career was one-year contracts, and he came back in 1996-97 for the run to the Finals.
  • Went on to a long career as an ESPN college basketball analyst.
re-signed to a contract extension through 1995-96
Tyrone Corbin Forward · 1991–94
  • ARRIVAL: 25 November 1991. The Jazz sent Thurl Bailey to the Minnesota Timberwolves and received Tyrone Corbin (the deal also involved a 1992 second-round pick — sources disagree on which direction it travelled, so do NOT write it on the site). source
signed free agent to a 10-day contract
Henry James Forward · 1992–93
  • The shooter signed a 10-day contract on April 4, 1993, at the very end of the season. It was the whole of his time in Utah.
  • Reached the NBA undrafted from Division II St. Mary's of Texas.
signed free agent for the remainder of the season
James Donaldson Center · 1992–95
  • The veteran centre came to Utah in 1992 by way of New York and played 49 games across two seasons before injuries forced him to retire.
  • Born in England, making him one of the earliest English-born NBA All-Stars.
