The Stockton–Malone era (1984–2003)

1991–92 Utah Jazz

55–27 (.671) · 1st, Midwest Division — 2nd seed in the Western Conference · coach: Jerry Sloan (55–27) · Delta Center — the team's first season in the building
Playoffs: beat the Los Angeles Clippers 3–2, beat Seattle 4–1, lost to Portland 2–4 in the franchise's first Western Conference Finals

The Jazz moved into a new home and had the best season in their history to that point. Larry H. Miller announced in July 1991 that Delta Air Lines had bought the naming rights to the arena he had privately financed . The building was finished on October 4, 1991 and dedicated on the 10th, and it replaced a Salt Palace that seated 12,616 and had no luxury suites or retail space.

  • Background: Quotes from 25-26 November 1991. Scott Layden (Jazz director of player personnel): 'a tough deal for us, because Thurl has meant so much to the franchise and he has been with us so long. But we're always trying to improve the team.' Minnesota coach Jimmy Rodgers: 'We feel the addition of Bailey will help us gain size at the forward position.' Delaney Rudd: 'I'm sad and he's a good friend...But I'd much rather hear he got traded than he got cut.' Corbin himself: 'It's pretty tough (being traded) because I'm getting old...It's going to be good to have the chance to be in the playoffs every year.' source
  • ARRIVAL: 25 November 1991. The Jazz sent Thurl Bailey to the Minnesota Timberwolves and received Tyrone Corbin (the deal also involved a 1992 second-round pick — sources disagree on which direction it travelled, so do NOT write it on the site). source
