Two-time All-Star with the Washington Bullets, the Mississippi State guard was one of the era's purest mid-range scorers — off-balance, fading, lethal coming off screens. As a rookie in 1984 he hit the Maryland Miracle, a falling-out-of-bounds game-winner launched from behind the backboard. Traded to Utah in 1990, he averaged 18.6 and then 20.2 points beside Stockton and Karl Malone (no relation) and helped reach the 1992 Western Conference Finals before the 1994 trade that brought Jeff Hornacek.

He later coached the D-League's Columbus Riverdragons to a 102-98 record. He lives in Chandler, Arizona with his wife, has four children and a grandson, and is a nephew of Vivian Malone Jones, the first Black graduate of the University of Alabama.

HOW HE CAME & WENTUtah landed him in a June 1990 three-team trade for Bobby Hansen and Eric Leckner, wanting a third scorer beside Stockton and Karl Malone. He grew unhappy with his role in Jerry Sloan's offence and went to Philadelphia for Jeff Hornacek in February 1994.
