Backing up John Stockton required patience, and Delaney Rudd had plenty — three seasons as the Jazz's reserve point guard after a college career at Wake Forest and two years with PAOK in Greece. His moment came in Game 5 of the 1992 Western Conference Finals: with Stockton out with an eye injury and Utah trailing late, Rudd swished a 23-foot three-pointer that silenced the Portland crowd and forced overtime.
The North Carolina native kept playing long after Utah, spending six seasons with ASVEL in France from 1993 to 1999 — a working guard's career that stretched from the CBA to the French league.
HOW HE CAME & WENTUtah drafted him 83rd overall in 1985 and waived him in camp. He went to Greece, came back on a one-year deal in November 1989, and spent three seasons backing up John Stockton before the club declined his option in 1992.

DELANEY RUDD · 10 NOTES- Played in the CBA and then in Greece with PAOK Thessaloniki before making his NBA debut on his 27th birthday.
- On February 1, 1992 he entered with 2:48 left in overtime after Stockton fouled out and hit an 18-footer with 2.6 seconds to beat Phoenix 117-116.
- On being a deep reserve: "If I'm going to play one minute a game, then I guess I've just got to play the best one minute I can."
- His No. 4 hangs retired at the Astroballe in Lyon, next to French great Alain Gilles, after 167 games and six All-Star selections with ASVEL.
- Spent 35 days in hospital with Covid in late 2020 and nearly died, losing his father the same year.
- He grew up in Halifax, North Carolina, a village of roughly 350 people, and did not find basketball until he was eight.
- He earned his way to Wake Forest by being named MVP at a Demon Deacons summer camp.
- He ran the point for the 1984 Wake Forest team that reached the Elite Eight, with a freshman named Muggsy Bogues alongside him.
- After the minor leagues went badly he left basketball altogether and went into business in Greensboro before trying Europe.
- He owns the NC Basketball Academy in Greensboro, where his daughter Tierra, once a six-year-old camper, now helps him coach.
