John Crotty

Undrafted out of Virginia — where he was a two-year captain and held the career assists record until 2023 — Crotty willed himself into an 11-season NBA point guard, breaking in with the Jazz in 1992 and spending his first four years in Utah. He played 477 career games for seven teams, and long baskets were playfully called the Crotty Chop.

Miami became home after basketball: radio analyst for the Heat from 2005, promoted in 2017 to television color commentator alongside Eric Reid. He is also a principal in the Miami office of the real estate firm Avison Young. Back in 1987 he was a McDonald's All-American out of Christian Brothers Academy in New Jersey.

HOW HE CAME & WENTUndrafted, he signed with Utah in September 1992 and spent three seasons behind John Stockton. The Jazz waived him in October 1995, wanting a backup who could still develop. He returned in 2000 for two more seasons and retired in 2002.

JOHN CROTTY · 6 NOTES
  • Went undrafted out of Virginia and still played more than a decade in the NBA.
  • He was a McDonald's All-American in 1987, playing for the East squad at the Spectrum in Philadelphia.
  • He chose Virginia over Notre Dame, North Carolina, Stanford and Villanova.
  • His first NBA job was backing up John Stockton, about the least generous minutes situation available to a young point guard.
  • Knee surgery in February 2002 ended his final Jazz season early. 'I haven't been able to get over the hump with it,' he said of the rehab, and he missed the playoffs.
  • He arrived at camp in 2001 having to win the backup job outright. 'I think (competition) brings the best, and the worst, out of people,' Crotty said.
