The ledger
The Stockton–Malone era (1984–2003)2001–02 Utah Jazz
The 28th season in franchise history and the 23rd in Salt Lake City opened with the Jazz visibly aging. They lost five of their first seven games and sank to 6–11, and the whispers about the end of the Stockton–Malone era started early. The team steadied itself, reached the All-Star break at 25–24 and finished 44–38, fourth in the Midwest Division and eighth in the West — a 19th straight playoff berth and, more remarkably, a 17th consecutive winning season, which passed the Los Angeles Lakers' run of sixteen between 1976–77 and 1991–92.

- Utah took him 24th overall in 2001 and waited two years for him to arrive from Spain, by which time his knee had gone. On August 3, 2005 he was moved to Memphis in the largest trade in NBA history — five teams, thirteen players.

2001 NBA draft second round pick (#53 overall)
- Utah took him 53rd overall in 2001 and he spent every one of his eight seasons with the franchise. The Jazz let him reach free agency in 2009 and did not bring him back.
- His identical twin brother Jason Collins also played more than a decade in the NBA.
- Background: After eight seasons he becomes a free agent in 2009 and Utah does not re-sign him. He goes to preseason camp in Portland, is waived on October 22, and Phoenix picks him up off waivers four days later because of frontcourt injuries. source
signed free agent to a 3-year $7M contract with a 1-year $4M player option
- Undrafted, he signed with Utah in July 2001 and played 104 games over two seasons. In September 2003 the Jazz traded him to Houston for Glen Rice and future draft picks. Houston waived him and he never played again.
- Became the first former NBA player to come out publicly as gay, in 2007.
- Background: Signs with the Jazz in July 2001 as a free agent (Deseret News: 'Jazz sign Amaechi; Polynice apparently gone' — July 19, 2001). The contract is multi-year. source

- EXIT — DATE: he signs with the Atlanta Hawks on Monday, July 30, 2001. UPI the same day: 'The Atlanta Hawks landed their second free agent point guard in four days Monday'. Deseret on July 31: 'Jazz free agent Jacque Vaughn signed with the Atlanta Hawks on Monday, formally ending the former University of Kansas point guard's four-season run in Utah.' source
- THE REASON (confirmed, Deseret): the Jazz make NO attempt to re-sign him, because they are confident John Stockton will return for an 18th season. The plan for camp is for veteran JOHN CROTTY to be Stockton's backup, and the club will no longer carry three point guards as it had before. Free agent Rusty LaRue (formerly Chicago) may get an invitation after a good summer league. source

- THE REASON he was not re-signed is NOT explained in any accessible source — Deseret merely states the fact. He was not traded and not waived mid-contract. source
