Jacque Vaughn

The Dial Award for the nation's top high school scholar-athlete went to a basketball player for the first time in 1992 — Vaughn, out of John Muir High with a 3.94 GPA. At Kansas he set school and Big Eight assist records, was the 1997 Academic All-American of the Year, and saw his jersey retired at Allen Fieldhouse. The Jazz took him 27th in 1997 to apprentice at point guard for four seasons, and he retired in 2009 with a ring from the 2007 Spurs.

He has coached nearly ever since — head coach of the Orlando Magic and later the Brooklyn Nets, and now an assistant at his alma mater Kansas. Married since 2003 with two sons, he reads and writes poetry.

HOW HE CAME & WENTUtah took him 27th overall in 1997 and he spent four seasons behind John Stockton. The Jazz made no effort to re-sign him in 2001, confident Stockton would return with John Crotty as backup. He signed with Atlanta that July.
