Straight out of Melbourne, Dante Exum arrived as the fifth pick of the 2014 draft, having skipped college entirely. The teenage guard played all 82 games as a rookie — only the 10th Jazz rookie ever to do so — but an ACL tear in 2015 began a run of shoulder, ankle and knee injuries that shadowed the rest of his Utah years before a December 2019 trade to Cleveland for Jordan Clarkson.
Born in East Melbourne to American parents, Exum rebuilt his career the long way — FC Barcelona, then an ABA League title with Partizan Belgrade in 2023 — before returning with Dallas and reaching the 2024 NBA Finals. He also won bronze with Australia at the Tokyo Olympics.

- His father Cecil played college basketball at North Carolina.
- Played Australian rules football at school and joked that his athleticism was fine but he simply could not kick the ball.
- Came up through the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra, the same pipeline that produced Joe Ingles and Patty Mills.
- American scouts and reporters flew to Australia to watch him, and his father fielded late-night calls from unlisted numbers.
- Made his NBA debut on the same October night as fellow Australian Joe Ingles, both pulling on a Jazz uniform for the first time.
