Raised in San Antonio by parents who both served in the Air Force, Clarkson played at Tulsa and Missouri before the Lakers landed him with the 46th pick in 2014 — a bargain, as he made the All-Rookie First Team. He joined the Jazz in 2019 and became the league's most dangerous bench scorer, winning the 2021 Sixth Man of the Year award during five seasons in Utah.
His Filipino roots run deep — his grandmother came from Bacolor, Pampanga — and Clarkson holds Filipino citizenship and has represented the Philippine national team, where his following is enormous. In 2026 he won an NBA championship with the New York Knicks.
HOW HE CAME & WENTUtah acquired him from Cleveland for Dante Exum and two second-rounders on December 24, 2019, and he became the first Sixth Man of the Year in franchise history. By 2025 the club wanted the minutes for young guards and would not risk its protected draft pick on veterans — no trade partner appeared, so on June 30 the two sides bought out the deal.
