Born with bowed legs that were broken and reset twice before his second birthday, Howard was raised by his grandmother Helen in Winston-Salem. At Wake Forest he became the unanimous 2003 ACC Player of the Year and the first member of his family to graduate from college. Drafted 29th by Dallas, he played ten NBA seasons, most of them as a Maverick, finishing with a 2010-11 stop in Utah.
He once turned down a Team USA invitation so he could run his annual youth camp back home in Winston-Salem. Howard stayed in the game after playing, and today he is head men's basketball coach at UNT Dallas.
HOW HE CAME & WENTHe signed a one-year deal worth about $3 million on December 15, 2011, at the opening of the lockout-shortened season.
