Born in Ogden and a college star at Utah — the Utes retired his No. 42 — Chambers became the NBA's first unrestricted free agent when he left Seattle for Phoenix in 1988. A four-time All-Star, he took MVP honors at the 1987 All-Star Game with 34 points, and he later came home to sign with the Jazz, playing two seasons off the bench and in 1996 becoming the 24th player in league history to reach 20,000 points.
A hunter and horseback rider who never wanted to play outside the West, he closed with a league title at Maccabi Tel Aviv and retired in 1997. The Suns retired his number, and he remains one of only two eligible 20,000-point scorers not in the Hall of Fame.
HOW HE CAME & WENTPhoenix declined his option right after the Finals, and he signed a two-year deal with Utah — a homecoming for the Ogden native and former Ute.
