Cavanaugh split his college years between Wake Forest and George Washington, where he was MVP of the 2016 NIT championship run and averaged 18.3 points as a senior. He impressed enough on a two-way contract in Atlanta to earn a multi-year deal, then signed a two-way with the Jazz in August 2018, appearing in 11 NBA games alongside time with the Salt Lake City Stars.
The son of a Hamilton College player who also went pro overseas, Cavanaugh followed the family route to Europe — Alba Berlin, Tenerife in Spain, EuroLeague basketball with Zalgiris Kaunas, and since 2023, Bahcesehir Koleji in Istanbul.
