Undrafted out of Baylor in 2015, O'Neale took the long road to Salt Lake City — a year with Riesen Ludwigsburg in Germany, another with Gran Canaria in Spain, and a contract with Lithuania's Žalgiris he never played under before the Jazz signed him in 2017. Five seasons of sturdy wing defense later, Utah rewarded him with a four-year, $36 million extension in 2020.
Family always steered him — in college he transferred from Denver to Baylor to be nearer his ailing grandfather. Traded to Brooklyn in 2022 for a first-round pick, he posted his first career triple-double that November, then moved on to Phoenix and, in 2026, the Charlotte Hornets.
HOW HE CAME & WENTHe had signed with Zalgiris Kaunas but never played a game there — an NBA exception in that contract let Utah sign him after summer league. Five seasons later, on June 30, 2022, the club opened its teardown by trading him to Brooklyn for a first-round pick, wanting future trade capital and a roster spot.
