Kelly Olynyk

A Toronto-born seven-footer who played point guard until an eleventh-grade growth spurt, Olynyk grew up in Kamloops, British Columbia and chose Gonzaga partly to stay near home. A redshirt year transformed him into a consensus first-team All-American in 2013, and Boston grabbed him 13th overall in a draft-night swap. He reached the Finals with Miami in 2020 and spent 2022 to 2024 with the Jazz before a midseason trade to Toronto.

Olynyk earned his accounting degree before leaving Gonzaga and serves as captain of Canada's national team. In 2026 he reached another NBA Finals with San Antonio.

HOW HE CAME & WENTDetroit traded him and Saben Lee to Utah for Bojan Bogdanovic on September 26, 2022, in Danny Ainge's teardown. The Jazz dealt him to Toronto at the February 2024 deadline.

  • Represented Canada internationally for more than a decade.
  • His father was a long-time college basketball coach and his mother an NBA statistician.
  • Grew up playing for Toronto's Scarborough Blues rep team alongside future NBA guard Cory Joseph.
  • Also played quarterback in high school and broke his arm during a 2007 playoff game.
  • His mother was the NBA's first female scorekeeper, working the Raptors' first ever game in 1995 with four-year-old Kelly in the building.
  • He grew from 6-foot-3 to 6-foot-10 in grade eleven and simply kept playing point guard, which is why he still passes like one.
  • His game-winning layup beat New Orleans 122-121 in October 2022, days after he arrived in Salt Lake City.
  • He has a cameo in the Netflix comedy Running Point, with no dialogue and a buzzer-beating heave to win a fictional Game 7.
