Miye Oni

Nobody recruited him — Division III Williams College was his only real option out of Viewpoint School in Los Angeles. Yale coach James Jones spotted his highlight tape in 2015, and after a prep year at Suffield Academy, Oni blossomed into the 2019 Ivy League Player of the Year and a three-time All-Ivy selection. That improbable climb carried him to Utah, where he spent his NBA years from 2019 to 2022.

Basketball started early — a toy hoop at age two, a YMCA league at five. His parents Opeyemi and Oludotun emigrated from Nigeria, his father working as an engineer and professor. Oni most recently played for Osos de Manati in Puerto Rico.

HOW HE CAME & WENTGolden State took him 58th overall in 2019 and sold his rights to Utah. All 80 of his NBA games came in a Jazz uniform. On January 4, 2022 the club sent him and a second-round pick to Oklahoma City to trim its luxury-tax bill and open roster spots.

At Suffield he once poured in 52 points with 11 three-pointers, breaking Shabazz Napier's National Prep School Invitational record.
He hit the go-ahead three as Nigeria stunned the United States in a warm-up game before the Tokyo Olympics.
He was the first Ivy League player drafted since 1995 and the first from Yale since Chris Dudley in 1987.
He started shooting at age two on a toy hoop and cried whenever his father made him stop.
Yale let him finish his political science degree after he was drafted, and he came back to walk at commencement in 2022.
He is one of two founding ambassadors for Connecticut CASA, which trains volunteers to speak up for vulnerable children in court.
