Pete Chilcutt

A North Carolina Tar Heel taken in the first round by Sacramento in 1991, Chilcutt won a ring with the 1994–95 Houston Rockets. The Alabama-raised forward stretched a nine-year career across seven franchises, finishing with the Jazz in 1999–2000, his final NBA season.

Then he traded locker rooms for classrooms, teaching sixth-grade math and science at Folsom Middle School in California, and founded the Clutch City Basketball Academy in the greater Sacramento area — a working teacher who happens to own a championship ring.

HOW HE CAME & WENTHe signed a one-year contract on October 3, 1999, played 26 games as a reserve and was waived that January.

PETE CHILCUTT · 7 NOTES
  • Born with only one kidney — he gave up football because of it and doctors advised him to stop playing sports altogether.
  • Now works as a basketball analyst on North Carolina podcasts, decades after Dean Smith kept writing him handwritten notes and flew to his 1995 wedding.
  • He started 15 of 20 playoff games on Houston's 1995 championship run, averaging 4.5 points and 2.9 rebounds.
  • Dean Smith's wife Linnea hand-painted a Carolina blue stepladder for his wedding, and decades later it was still the only gift he and Monique used.
  • He grew up in Eutaw, Alabama, a town of about 2,000, the son of a schoolteacher and the stepson of a university professor.
  • Between Detroit and Houston he squeezed in a season in Italy, a stop the standard NBA record books miss entirely.
  • Kansas beat his favoured North Carolina team in the 1991 Final Four, and Mark Randall still teases him about getting Randall into the NBA.
