Matt Thomas

A two-time all-state pick who scored more than 2,000 points at Onalaska High in Wisconsin, Thomas starred at Iowa State, then earned the nickname Mr. 99% in Spain for his unguarded catch-and-shoot precision with Valencia. He now plays for Besiktas in Turkey's top league.

HOW HE CAME & WENTToronto traded him to Utah for a future second-round pick on March 25, 2021, and the Jazz waived him that August.

  • Was one of the best three-point shooters in the Spanish ACB before reaching the NBA.
  • At Valencia he shot so well on open catch-and-shoot looks that he picked up the nickname Mr. 99%.
  • His mother was a four-sport high school star who held her school's single-game scoring record with 48 points.
  • Lost his father at age nine, a tragedy that drew him especially close to his mother.
  • His best night in a Jazz uniform was a perfect one, 17 points on seven-for-seven shooting in a 154-105 rout of Sacramento in April 2021.
  • As a high school senior he scored 50 points in two and a half quarters against Tomah.
  • He led Onalaska to a Wisconsin state title as a junior, scoring 30 in the championship game of a 27-1 season.
