Colorado's Player of the Year in 1989 after a perfect 24–0 title season at Littleton High, Thompson played at Texas A&M and Oklahoma State before Orlando took him 27th in 1994. His 168-game NBA run passed through five teams — the Jazz in 1996–97 among them — with a 26-point career night for Denver along the way.

Coaching became his life's work: ten years as head coach at Texas-San Antonio, including the school's first NCAA tournament win in 2011. Weeks after UTSA let him go in March 2016, he was diagnosed with double organ failure, and he died of complications on June 9, 2016, at age 45.

HOW HE CAME & WENTHe came from Orlando on August 9, 1996 with Kenny Gattison and a first-round pick — the pick that became Andrei Kirilenko — for Felton Spencer. Utah waived him in November.
