Brad Davis

Before he became a Dallas institution, Davis was a journeyman. The Maryland point guard went 15th overall to the Lakers in 1977, bounced to Indiana, and won a CBA title with Anchorage before the Utah Jazz signed him in February 1980 for the tail end of their first Salt Lake season. That December the expansion Mavericks called, and the fit lasted twelve seasons, a team-record 7.2 assists per game in 1982-83, and the franchise lead in assists, games, and minutes.

In 1992 his No. 15 became the first number Dallas ever retired. He stayed on as an assistant coach and broadcaster, tied to the Mavericks for the team's entire existence. His brother Mickey also played in the NBA.

HOW HE CAME & WENTThe Jazz signed him as a free agent out of the CBA on February 29, 1980. He was gone by summer — a Detroit contract in July, cut in October, and then the expansion Mavericks, where he spent the rest of his career.
