Eighth pick in the 2006 draft out of UConn, Gay set a Memphis franchise record with 1,632 points in 2007-08, becoming just the third Grizzly to average 20 a game. A first-team All-Rookie selection and a Huskies of Honor inductee, the smooth scoring forward spent 2021 to 2023 with Utah and has since retired.
Music came before basketball in the Gay household. His father, Rudy Sr., sang lead for the R&B group Ace Spectrum and directed the band for The Stylistics. Gay grew up in Dundalk, Maryland, came up through Baltimore's famed Cecil-Kirk AAU program, and left Archbishop Spalding as a McDonald's All-American.
HOW HE CAME & WENTHe signed a two-year deal on August 6, 2021, joining a 52-win team and his old Memphis teammate Mike Conley. Two years later Utah used his contract as the outgoing salary in the trade that brought John Collins from Atlanta.
