Pace Mannion

Salt Lake City born and University of Utah bred, Mannion went 43rd overall to Golden State in 1983 and played six NBA seasons for six teams, including a homecoming with the Jazz from 1984 to 1986.

His finest hour came in Italy. Playing for Cantu, he scored 35 points in the 1991 Korac Cup final win over Real Madrid. The hometown connection endured afterward too, as he worked as a studio analyst on Utah Jazz television pre- and post-game shows.

HOW HE CAME & WENTHe signed a two-year contract on December 22, 1984 and was waived in April 1986.

  • His son Nico Mannion played in the NBA and for the Italian national team.
  • In 1983 students at Rice University's Wiess College watched him trip on a breakaway layup and founded the Pace Mannion Fan Club in tribute.
  • On January 14, 1986 about 125 fan club members chanted his name in Houston, and he scored 13 points as Utah ended the Rockets' 20-game home unbeaten run.
  • Away from the NBA he was a star, averaging 20.1 points for the CBA's Rockford Lightning in 1988-89 and making the All-CBA First Team.
