Scoring came easily by his senior year at Rice — 26.4 points a game, third in the nation, Conference USA Player of the Year — and the Jazz called his name 25th overall in 2007. In Utah he became a D-League phenomenon with the Utah Flash, leading the league at 25.6 points and tying, then breaking, the single-game record with 51- and 53-point nights. The NBA minutes never quite followed: nine games as a rookie, a career-high 12 points at Sacramento.
After stops with Real Madrid, Italy's Pesaro, and a late Wizards stint, Almond retired and founded Almond Athletics, a nonprofit, in 2013. His number 22 was the first basketball jersey retired at Georgia's McEachern High School.
HOW HE CAME & WENTUtah drafted him 25th overall in 2007 and he spent most of two seasons scoring heavily for the Utah Flash in the D-League. Orlando signed him in September 2009 and waived him a month later.
