A streetball-hardened point guard from St. Albans, Queens, Jackson won 1988 Rookie of the Year with the Knicks — the lowest draft pick to take the award in thirty years — after averaging 13.6 points and 10.6 assists. His 17-year career touched seven franchises, and the 2002–03 season in Utah came near the end, one season before he retired in 2004.
The second act kept him on camera: ESPN and ABC broadcasts alongside Jeff Van Gundy and Mike Breen, then three seasons as Golden State's head coach, leading the Warriors to consecutive playoff berths for the first time in over two decades before his 2014 firing and a return to the booth.
HOW HE CAME & WENTDenver waived him and Utah signed him on October 2, 2002 to back up John Stockton, at 37. He played all 82 games without starting one. Stockton retired that May, the Jazz went young, and Jackson sat unsigned until Houston took him in January 2004.
