The ABA was Calvin's stage. Passed over until the 14th round of the 1969 NBA draft, the 6-foot USC guard signed instead with the Los Angeles Stars and reached the ABA Finals as a rookie. Five All-Star selections and 3,067 assists, second in league history, followed across seven ABA seasons. After the merger he played for five NBA clubs, including the Utah Jazz in 1979-80, and retired in 1981.
In college he helped USC end UCLA's 41-game winning streak with a 46-44 upset at Pauley Pavilion. A 50-person panel voted him onto the ABA All-Time Team in 1997, and he later coached briefly, including two games as interim boss of the Clippers in 1992.
HOW HE CAME & WENTThe old ABA All-Star reached Utah in 1979, in the franchise's first Salt Lake City season, near the end of his career.
