Center · 1984–85

Billy Paultz

The Whopper out of St. John's chose the ABA in 1970, pulled down 33 rebounds in a game for the Nets, won the 1974 ABA title, made four All-Star teams and led the league with 253 blocks in 1975–76. The NBA years brought San Antonio, then Houston and the 1981 Finals alongside Moses Malone — plus, thanks to a midseason trade, an 84-game season in an 82-game year.

Utah in 1984–85 was the final stop of 15 professional seasons. Never quick but always shrewd, he summed himself up as a player who could 'do a little bit of everything.'

HOW HE CAME & WENTThe old ABA centre finished his career in Utah, arriving for 1984-85 after Houston waived him and San Antonio picked him up.

BILLY PAULTZ · 5 NOTES
  • Nicknamed The Whopper for his frame and his appetite for contact.
  • One of a shrinking group of ABA originals still playing in the NBA by 1985.
  • He and Moses Malone carried Houston to the 1981 NBA Finals, where he logged 37 minutes of Game 1 at Boston Garden.
  • Around the league he also answered, less flatteringly, to Baby Huey.
  • He sized himself up plainly, saying he was never an overpowering center but a man who could do a little bit of everything.
