From Newark's Malcolm X Shabazz High to Seton Hall, Avent played in the 1989 NCAA championship game before Atlanta drafted him 15th overall in 1991. When contract talks with Milwaukee stalled, he took a year in Italy with Phonola Caserta, then returned on a four-year Bucks deal. Six NBA seasons followed — Milwaukee, Orlando, Vancouver, the Jazz in 1994–95, and the Clippers.
The game kept him traveling afterward, with stints in Greece for Panathinaikos in 1996–97 and PAOK in 2001. He was born in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.
HOW HE CAME & WENTUtah signed him to a non-guaranteed contract on January 22, 1999, for the lockout season, and waived him four weeks later.
