Andris Biedrins

Riga produced him — a professional with BK Skonto at 16, then the 11th pick of the 2004 draft and the youngest player in the NBA as a Golden State rookie. Under Don Nelson he broke through, leading the league in field-goal percentage in 2006–07 and peaking at 11.9 points and 11.2 rebounds in 2008–09, numbers that earned a 54-million-dollar contract.

Then the game turned on him. His free-throw shooting collapsed to 4-for-25 in 2009–10, back and groin injuries piled up, and the confidence never came back. His final NBA season was spent in Utah in 2013–14.

HOW HE CAME & WENTHe came from Golden State in July 2013 as salary filler — a dump designed to open cap room for Andre Iguodala — alongside Brandon Rush and Richard Jefferson. Utah waived him in April 2014 and he never played in the NBA again.

  • Jumped straight from the Latvian league to the NBA lottery at 18.
  • During the 2005–06 season he totalled his Porsche on an Oakland freeway driving to a home game, then missed two games with back spasms.
  • Arrived in America with almost no English and taught himself the language in six months while training in Los Angeles before the 2004 draft.
  • The first thing he bought with his rookie contract was a pink-framed pool table with red felt, a nod to daily games with friends back in Riga.
  • His first outlay after signing his second Warriors deal was taking twelve children from an after-school program out for pizza, popcorn and a movie.
  • In a November 2006 upset of San Antonio he went stride for stride with Tim Duncan, taking 15 rebounds and blocking six shots, three of them Duncan attempts in a row.
  • At the 2004 Under-18 European Championship he averaged 21.8 points and 14.4 rebounds, once posting 26 points and 20 rebounds against Italy.
