Robinson signed with the New Orleans Jazz as a free agent in 1977 and delivered a season for the ages: 22.7 points and a league-leading 15.7 rebounds a game in 1977-78, All-NBA First Team, and an All-Star nod — at 6-foot-7, one of the first non-centers ever to win a rebounding title. The Tennessee State product had waited his turn behind Elvin Hayes in Washington, reaching the 1975 Finals with the Bullets.
Traded to Phoenix in January 1979 for two players and two first-round picks, he made another All-Star team in 1981 and retired in 1985 with 11,988 points and 7,267 rebounds. He later spent three seasons as a Sacramento Kings assistant coach.
HOW HE CAME & WENTHe signed with New Orleans as a free agent before 1977-78, with Ron Behagen and cash going to Atlanta as compensation, and led the NBA in rebounding. On January 12, 1979 the Jazz traded him to Phoenix for two players and two first-round picks.
